I've signed up as a reader for the upcoming 24 hour read-a-thon and am so excited. I spent some time compiling a list of reads. Anyone else this dorky? am I the only one? Well, I have to have some sort of plan as I'm prone to fickleness and need to have a number of alternate selections. I've noted that some other readers have stated that short books are key to feeling some accomplishment with the read-a-thon. This make sense, so, I thought I'd go with YA fiction. I hardly ever read it so this would give me a reason. After reading Bibliofreak's post today, I've also added some novellas to the list. But, my list is still too short. This is largely due to having crappy public libraries where I live. I don't own much of either YA fiction or novellas, so I figured this would be a good opportunity to utilize the library. Needless to say, I need a little help. Here's my list so far:
1. Quicksand by Nella Larsen (I own this one)
2. Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
3. Oroonko by Aphra Behn
4. The House On Mango Street by Susan Cisneros
5. The First Part Last by Angela Johnson
6. Night by Elie Wiesel

So, I've got a mix of cultures and ethnic groups but only one work of YA fiction. I'm looking for an Asian title to add. I'd like to have at least four more books on the list giving me ten choices. Feel free to make suggestions.

Haha not the only one, I made my list ages ago :) Struggling to think of asian titles, 'The Nightingale Floor' by Lian Hearn is sort fo YA set in feudal Japan, but Lian Hearn is a white authors pen name. A really short YA would be 'Nick and Norah's Ultimate Playlist', which is a lot of fun. If you read all those books on your list I will be so jealous, I'll probably manage one.

Oh heavens no Jodie. I'm not a fast reader, so I think I might get through 3-5 books. And that's because those are mostly novellas under 200 pages each.

Glad to know I'm not alone. Isn't Nick and Norah a movie too? Yeah i think so. I'll have to check those out. Thanks Jodie!

Try Last Empress or Empress Orchid by Anchee Min or Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. The Good Earth by Pearl Buck is a sure winner too.

Thanks Reads4Pleasure. I've had Anchee Min on my radar for a while now. I really want to read Red Azalea. I'm really looking for novellas for the read-a-thon.

Yes it is a movie too, I haven't seen it but the trailers looked cute.

You are not alone:) Making lists is definitely part of the fun. Some on your list are new to me (Night is very good). 'See' you at the read-a-thon.

I've read four and five. Own Passing by Larsen and I believe I read Quicksand.

Happy reading.

I own both Quicksand and Passing in a single volume. I read Passing already, so thought this a good opportunity to read the other novella.

I hope I enjoy Night as much as numerous others seem to have enjoyed it.

My public library system has disappointed me once again. And my local Borders for that matter. Neither has a copy of Woman At Point Zero, which was going to be my final selection. I just couldn't believe the library didn't have this book. And all copies of Cisneros book were checked out as well. But the other five choices are a go.

Thanks all for stopping by!

Sandra Cisneros's book is a perfect one for the readathon. It's short and sweet. One of my fave books as a teen. I also love Garcia Marquez and Elie Wiesel but have not read those particular titles by them on your pile. Enjoy! :)

I finally pulled my list together this morning! You have some heavy books. I went with mostly light stuff.
